“…WHY DO WE ENDLESSLY SEARCH, WHY DO WE WANDER? TO REVEAL.” EXCERPT FROM WAW EXHIBITION

This past September I flew down to New York for a two-day whirlwind of a trip for one reason only: to see and experience the 7,000 sqft pop-up exhibition Wondering Around Wandering (WAW) by artist and graphic designer, Mike Perry. WAW is a free three-month exhibition and community art project in Crown Heights—an emerging Brooklyn neighbourhood where Mike lives and works. More than an exhibition, there have been free events, workshops, screenings, gatherings, open discussions and other fun stuff  held by Mike and and other design and illustration professionals. Mike has moved his studio into the space for the duration of the exhibition. The aim is to give back to the large community of people that have supported him over the years. Open to the public since September, WAW is now in its final days, closing forever on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.

MIKE PERRY

In case you’re not familiar with Mike Perry’s work, he is kind of incredible!  An interdisciplinary artist, he illustrates, draws, paints,  silkscreens, builds, animates, makes zines, curates books, designs and the list goes on! You can spot his work and aesthetic from a mile away! I’ve always been drawn to his quirky,  doodle-esque, bold, colourful (lots of neon!) approach. He represents DIY at its finest! Describing him as prolific is an understatement. Earlier this year  Mike’s first monograph of his work was published by Rizzoli, titled Wondering Around Wandering (Works So Far). This book inspired the exhibition.

KICKSTARTER

The exhibition was  a Kickstarter project. Back in the summer when I visited Brooklyn,  I noticed Mike’s 12 hour draw-a-thon to draw awareness for the project, with the goal of raising $30 000. Tons of supporters (766 to be exact)  happily donated,  I being one of them and helped to exceed the goal.  The exhibition is also sponsored by Urban Outfitters (a long time collaborator with Mike) along with Duvel, Dry Soda Co. and Paper Tiger.

SCULPTURES AND SCREEN PRINTS

“…WE WILL COLLECTIVELY CREATE A UNIVERSE AND BE FURTHER INSPIRED AND TRANSPORTED BY IT” EXCERPT FROM WAW EXHIBITION

Mike wanted the space to become a “dynamic environment for continuous creation”, where visitors can “explore freely and create their own unique experiences”.

“…SO AS YOU ENTER HERE, LET YOUR IMAGINATION BE UNSURPASSABLE, RECALLING THAT IN TRAVELING IN TO THE INFINITE, WE BECOME IT. YOUR ARE THE STARSHIP; WE ARE YOUR MISSION CONTROL. TOGETHER, WE MAKE REVELATION POSSIBLE. THROUGH OUR GROUP IMAGINATION, WE SEEK TO KNOW NEW WAYS OF DREAMING TOGETHER.” EXCERPT FROM WAW EXHIBITION

TYPE WORKSHOP

I participated in a type workshop while in town.  I have always admired Mike’s approach to hand-drawn lettering. I knew it would be a blast to hang out in the exhibition space for an afternoon and build alphabets—and it was! My NYC bud Angela to signed up too.

I picked up one of  Mike’s Japanese prints at the show. Everyone at the workshop walked away with a silkscreened bag and peel and stick hand-dreawn type wall decals, design by Mike for Urban Outfitters.

On this trip, I chose to stay in  Crown Heights, Brooklyn (airbnb again!) I wanted to experience another part of Brooklyn and check out the places in the neighbourhood recommended by Mike. I made multiple stops to Crosby coffee,  just around the corner from the show.

HAND DRAWN TYPOGRAPHY “A LITTLE LOST BUT ON A GREAT JOURNEY”

I feel lucky to have been able to visit the show a few times while in the city and take part in a workshop. I was very cool to be part a small part of this awesome project.

According to the website, the Wondering Around Wandering show has:

/ welcomed 3,000 visitors
/ hosted 14 workshops
/ held 3 performances & screenings
/ exhibited 3 group shows with 100 artists
/ hosted tons of class trips & kids events
/ sold 70+ works of art.

Do you live in the NYC area and still have time to make it to the show? Attend the  CLOSING FOREVER GALA, a benefit for Sandy relief. I wish that I could! //

ADMIRING THE TILING ARTISTRY AT THE SUBWAY / A NEW USE FOR A BATHTUB ON GRAND ST.IN WILLIAMSBURG

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting New York three times since July, which as been totally energizing! First, it was for a summer trip with Darcy to explore Brooklyn back in July. I returned in September to do a type workshop with by Mike Perry and then again in October for  The Blogcademy. My initial summer trip was such a blast and very inspiring. I wanted to go back asap! Pretty soon I found myself booking spontaneous trips when the opportunity presented itself.  Like a bazillion other people, I LOVE NEW YORK! I have developed a soft spot for Brooklyn. Here are some of the adventures and gems that I happened upon along the way.

I loved just wandering the streets. It’s amazing what you can stumble upon! I discovered this street art plastered to a door somewhere under the Brooklyn bridge. This was on my way to Grimaldi’s Pizzeria; a fantastic pizza joint.

A CABIN IN A LOFT

IMAGES COURTESY OF AIRBNB AND TERRI CHIAO

In the summer Darcy and I rented out a cabin in a loft in the vibrant, artist-filled neighbourhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. This was our first time booking through airbnb (highly recommended) and boy did we ever get spoiled! The space is owned by local artists Terri Chiao and Adam Frezza. Terri, who is also an architect designed the space herself, which has been featured in numerous design magazines, blogs and local open-studio events. It is an open concept, sun-drenched loft with two cabins. There were so many details that made me smile! Things like Boo, their friendly cat and hand-made notes by Terri on how to use the french press. She also left a map of Bushwick and listed her favourite places to check out. You could tell that she puts care and love into everything that she does. We really appreciated the little details that made it so charming and inviting.

A Cabin In A Loft also doubles as an art gallery. One big wall is covered with art pieces done by Terri, Adam and other local artists, all for sale. I bought a few postcards by N S E W to keep as a memento. I would love to stay here again!

BROOKLYN CHARM

MY BROOKLYN CHARM COLLECTION / STORE SHOTS

A friend told me about Brooklyn Charm in Williamsburg before my summer trip. It was one of the first places that I visited.  I love accessories, so this place rocks my world! It is filled with both pre-made jewellery as well as a million chains, beads and charms and supplies to make your own custom creations.  I have now spent hours there and have made a point to visit whenever I’ve been in town. I’ve cultivated quite the collection of my own necklaces, bracelets and knuckle rings. Can’t get enough of this place! Luckily, they have an Etsy shop for all of you non-New Yorkers!

VINTAGE LOVE

In September while strolling on Bedford St. in Williamsburg, I discovered this lovely vintage store owned by Malin Landaeus, just over on N.6th. This is another place that I could spend hours at! The collection of shoes, clothing and accessories is to die for. Everything was hand-picked with great detail and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. The staff members are super-stylish Swedish women that are super friendly. I picked up this blazer that was hand-dyed by Malin. There are tons of pieces dyed in her signature style. I wanted them all! I also picked up a camel coloured leather backpack from Sweden, which I absolutely love!

THE TYPE DIRECTORS CLUB AT COOPER UNION

COMMUNICATION DESIGN, TYPEFACE DESIGN, AND MOVIE TITLE DESIGN ON DISPLAY AT THE TYPE DIRECTOR’S 58TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION

I was in the right place at the right time when I decided to go check out the Cooper Union Art Gallery one afternoon in July. I noticed the gallery was being set up for an exhibition that was opening that evening—yessss!  It was for the Type Director’s Club 58th annual exhibition opening. It was displaying the winners of the TDC competition in Communication Design, Typeface Design and Movie Title Design. There was no way I was going to miss this! When it came time, I switched the sandals I had been walking in all day around Manhattan. I had bought earlier a pair of ankle boots.  Darcy went off to check out vintage guitar stores in the area while I went to the show.

There was a short awards ceremony first. The exhibition was amazing to say the least. It was filled with top notch design work from participants from all over the world. I was drooling the whole time!

I had the pleasure of meeting many designers that had work in the show and other TDC members. One person in particular that I’ve kept in touch with is Angela Navarra, who is a designer and illustrator  who specializes in hand drawn typography. Love her!

OPENING NIGHT OF THE TYPE DIRECTOR’S 58TH ANNUAL EXHIBITION / TDC KEEPSAKE, DESIGNED BY JESSICA HISCHE

Visitors received a letter keepsake designed by Jessica Hische, to comemmorate the Type Director’s club 65th anniversary. Jessica Hische is a letterer and illustrator, who does brilliant work! I have always admired here, so this was pretty special.

KICKSTARTER

One night back in July while hanging out in the cabin, I noticed that Mike Perry (another artist I admire!)  was doing a 12 hour drawing marathon live on Twitter and YouTube to raise money and awareness for his Kickstarter project—a three month exhibition and community space in Brooklyn. I donated and later signed up for one of his workshops. This brought me back to the city not too long after. More details on this experience next week! //

Every so often I get an opportunity to be on set for a photoshoot. Mostly, it’s with the Bluenotes  Canada  for their seasonal advertising campaigns. This past July, I was a stylist’s assistant on set for a creative shoot that ended up published in Raukus magazine. The location was House of Moments in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood.

Talia Brown, a super talented stylist in Toronto and also my good friend, invited me to assist her.  My job was to steam clothes, record the clothing items and their respective designers used in each look. I also did a lot of folding and keeping all the clothes organized after a look was shot. I had not been a stylist’s  assistant before, but she assured me that I’d be great because I’m a detailed person. I’m always up for  trying new things!

The shoot was photographed by Alex Evans and featured Myles Sexton, who is quite the anomaly! He is an androgynous male model for both mens and womenswear collections. He is also a makeup artist, stylist and jewellery designer. Recently, he became an online reality tv personality with a new YouTube web series called I Walk For Myles In These Shoes. Myles organized this shoot and hand picked his team.

A big part of the inspiration for this shoot came from a Chanel Indian-inspired runway show. The concept for the styling was to keep the clothes colourful and playful.  So, the outfits were meant to start out more feminine, paired with masculine hair and makeup. As the looks progress, the clothes become more masculine, moving towards more feminine hair, makeup and accessories.

I had heard a lot about Talia’s styling experiences over the years— on set and for clients.  It was cool to finally watch her in action on set. The process of putting the looks together was very spontaneous and organic to the moment. The clothing items were pulled in advance, but nothing was solidified until right before the look was needed. As a stylist, that takes a lot of confidence and experience!

I love the clothing used in all of the looks! There were a lot of pieces in the shoot by designer Raji Aujla. Her meticulously tailored, masculine/feminine garments with an Indian flavour were a perfect fit. There was also a lot of  Harry Rosen suits and shirts used.

House of Moments was a unique and inspiring space to work in. It is versatile environment—a restaurant, lounge and art gallery. The space is flanked with Buddha statues, large art pieces and filled with antique wooden doors brought in from other parts of the world. All of the shots were done in front of these doors. In addition, the open concept nature of the building with high ceilings, dim lighting and reds, black and creme colours made for a to a rich, relaxing environment.

I love the use of jewellery in throughout the shoot. I have a pretty eclectic ring collection, so Talia asked me to bring them along. They ended up being used in most of the shots.

All of the accessories were layed out on a back lit table. Myles brought tons of pieces from his jewellery line. My rings are pictured in the top right.

Chanel nail polish (how appropriate!) and necklaces from Myles’s jewellery line.

BEHIND THE SCENES:ALEX EVANS PHOTOGRAPHING MYLES SEXTON

It was a pretty relaxed shoot that only went half a day. There was a great energy in the room. The team was small and everyone was super nice. Although my job was relatively simple, I was kept on my toes the whole time—folding, recording, steaming, packing and unpacking. I was important that I stayed super organized and kept things going smoothly for Talia.  It was great to meet Alex Evans; he was very sweet and incredibly down to earth. I found him to be quite endearing! His photography work is amazing.

It was also a pleasure to meet Myles; he was very focused and knew exactly what he wanted. He definitely is a driven and entrepreneurial individual. I think he is a beautiful person—very confident and complex, a true artist. Raukus magazine states in their current issue Taboo:

“WE AT RAUKUS CELEBRATE PEOPLE WHO UNCEASINGLY SEARCH FOR THE WAY TO EXPRESS TEHMSELVES AND AREN’T AFRAID TO BE WHO THEY ARE, WHETHER IT IS THROUGH ART, FASHION, PERSONALITY, PREFERENCE OR PLAIN AND SIMPLE, LOVE”.

The essence of Myles definitely fits this description. I think the shoot was a great fit for the magazine.
